01Define the Decision Level Before Asking for a Shrinkage Number
“What is the shrinkage?” sounds like one question, but a buyer may be trying to approve a loose tape, a sewn seam, a garment panel, a bag opening or a complete product after care. Those are different decision levels. The webbing can contract, grow or distort on its own, while the assembled product also reflects the behaviour of the shell fabric, lining, thread, elastic elements, adhesive, coating, hardware and seam geometry.
Begin by naming the failure that matters. A small dimensional change can still expose an edge, shorten a loop, pull a waistband, distort a placket or make a strap wave when it is restrained by another material. A larger component change may be harmless where the tape floats freely and the product design allows it. The approval limit therefore belongs to the intended assembly and customer requirement, not to a generic fibre or supplier promise.
Use two linked gates. The component gate verifies the identified webbing before and after the chosen treatment. The assembly gate verifies the same production-intent tape in its real seam, fold, hardware path or attachment. A passing component result does not automatically release the assembly, and an acceptable prototype does not explain which component changed unless the tape is also measured separately.

Choose the evidence level from the decision. One loose-tape percentage cannot answer every assembly or finished-product question.
02Identify the Tape, Orientation and Starting State
A dimensional-change result is only traceable when the specimen is traceable. Record the item code, production lot, declared fibre system, yarn and construction reference, finished width, thickness or mass reference where relevant, colour, finish, roll position and whether the tape was taken before or after any heat, moisture, dyeing, coating, calendaring, washing or other finishing step. Do not compare a development sample with a production lot if their construction or finishing history is unknown.
Mark direction explicitly. For narrow woven tape, length usually follows the warp and width follows the weft, but the report should state the product orientation rather than relying on an assumption. Knitted or elastic constructions may require additional care because applied tension changes the apparent length and width. Record whether the specimen is measured relaxed, under a defined tension, or in an assembled state, and keep that condition consistent before and after treatment.
ISO 3759 covers preparation, marking and measurement of fabrics, garments and fabric assemblies for dimensional-change tests after treatments such as washing, dry cleaning, soaking or steaming. Use the selected method rather than inventing marker spacing or handling rules from memory. Condition or precondition the specimen when the governing method calls for it, keep it free from unintended stretch, and identify all measurement points so the same locations can be compared after treatment.

03Select the Wash, Dry and Cycle Sequence From the Intended Care Route
“Machine washed” is not a reproducible procedure. ISO 6330:2021 provides different washing procedures for horizontal-axis, top-loading agitator and top-loading pulsator machines, plus multiple drying routes. Its official summary states that a complete test combines a washing and drying procedure and that machine, detergent and dryer parameters can affect results. It also states that each washing procedure represents one domestic wash. The report must therefore name the complete combination and the number of repetitions.
Start with the intended end-product care route, destination market and customer programme. ISO 3758:2023 covers care-labelling symbols for washing, bleaching, drying, ironing and professional textile care and describes the symbols as the most severe treatments that do not cause irreversible damage. A component test should support the proposed care instruction; it should not be selected simply because a hotter, faster or familiar cycle is easy for the laboratory to run.
When a North American customer or programme specifies AATCC procedures, use the required edition and scope. The official AATCC summaries distinguish TM135 for dimensional change of fabrics after home laundering from TM150 for garments. They offer several wash and drying parameters, but standardised laboratory conditions represent controlled comparisons rather than every household practice. Confirm whether the narrow tape fits the selected specimen scope and whether an additional assembly or garment method is needed.

Do not convert a supplier phrase such as “wash tested” into approval until every required field is identified.
04Measure Length, Width and Distortion—Then Report the Context
ISO 5077 specifies a method for determining dimensional change in fabrics, garments or other textile articles after an appropriate combination of washing and drying procedures. The important buyer-side point is that the calculation belongs to an identified specimen and treatment. Record the original and final readings, the reported percentage for each direction, and the sign convention used for contraction or growth. Do not publish a single absolute number that hides whether the change occurred along the length, across the width or in both directions.
Average values can hide local problems. Inspect every marked interval and note variation along the specimen. Also look for bow, skew, curl, edge waviness, surface buckling, twist, delamination, coating damage, colour change and altered hand. These observations are not interchangeable with dimensional change, but they may decide whether the tape can feed, fold, sew or lie flat after care. Use a separate appearance scale or test only when it is applicable and agreed.
The report should make comparison possible. Include specimen identity, orientation, number of specimens, treatment sequence, measurement state, individual results, summary result, acceptance criterion, pass or fail decision, deviations and photographs where useful. If a result comes from a supplier rather than an independent laboratory, that does not make it invalid; it means the buyer should understand the method, sample selection, equipment and decision responsibility before relying on it.
- Report lengthwise and widthwise change separately, with direction and sign clear.
- Retain original and final measurements rather than only the calculated percentage.
- Record distortion and appearance observations outside the percentage result.
- State the acceptance limit and who approved it before the test is interpreted.
- Treat a laboratory report as evidence for the tested specimen and procedure, not every colour, lot or application.
05Connect Dimensional Stability to Construction and Finishing Without Guessing the Cause
Fibre family alone cannot predict the finished result. Yarn form, twist, warp and weft balance, weave or knit structure, elastic elements, density, edge construction, tension during manufacture, dyeing route, thermal and moisture history, coating and mechanical finishing can all influence how a narrow fabric relaxes or responds to care. The same nominal material and width can therefore behave differently when the construction or process changes.
Terms such as “heat set,” “pre-shrunk,” “washed” or “stabilised” describe a process intention, not a complete acceptance result. Ask what stage was treated, which product variables are controlled and whether the production-intent sample follows the same route. Avoid prescribing an unverified temperature, dwell time or chemical finish: a setting suitable for one fibre, colour, elastic element or coating may damage another or change hand, shade, stretch and adhesion.
Use development trials to isolate the decision. Compare samples with the same intended construction but clearly identified finishing options, then run the chosen care procedure and assembly check. If a change improves dimensions but makes the tape too firm, glossy, wavy, narrow or difficult to sew, it has not solved the product requirement. Release a finishing route only when the dimensional, appearance and assembly results are acceptable together.

Ask the supplier to explain a suspected cause, but approve the identified output and process revision rather than an unsupported diagnosis.
06Validate Differential Change in the Real Garment, Bag or Shoe Assembly
The most visible failures often come from differential change. A tape and shell fabric may each be within their own component limits yet move by different amounts or in different directions. A stiff seam can restrain the tape locally while a free section relaxes. A bonded or coated layer can change the moisture and heat path. Hardware can hold one point fixed and shift another. That is why the production-intent assembly needs its own approval.
Build the seam, fold, loop or channel with the real layer count, stitch type, thread, needle, adhesive and hardware. Mark functional dimensions such as opening length, loop size, visible border, strap alignment or buckle position. After the full wash-and-dry sequence, review puckering, rippling, twist, seam roping, edge exposure, print or logo distortion, elastic recovery, hardware tracking and user contact. Measure the dimensions that affect fit or function, not every available dimension.
For garments, the AATCC TM150 summary confirms that garment-level dimensional-change evaluation is a separate scope from fabric testing and notes that the method may not apply to certain stretch fabrics. That is a reminder to confirm method suitability rather than forcing every product into one procedure. Bags, footwear and coated assemblies may require a customer protocol or product-specific care simulation in addition to a textile-component test.
- Use the actual shell, lining, foam, thread, elastic, adhesive and hardware where they affect the result.
- Mark the assembly dimensions and appearance zones that matter to fit, function or saleability.
- Apply the intended complete care sequence, not a loose-tape treatment with a different drying route.
- Photograph and retain the identified assembly before and after treatment.
- Reapprove when either the tape, attachment system, adjacent material or care instruction changes.
07Webbing Shrinkage RFQ, Test and Approval Checklist
Put dimensional stability into the RFQ before sampling. State the finished product and webbing location, whether the tape is free or restrained, the intended care instruction, the governing test method and edition if known, the wash and dry combination, cycle count, dimensions to measure and appearance or function risks. If the customer has not set an acceptance limit, mark it as a development decision instead of allowing the supplier to assume one.
Ask the supplier or laboratory to return the test plan before running the sample. Confirm specimen identity, orientation, measurement condition, treatment parameters, reporting format and deviations. Approve the component and assembly in separate rows of the sample record, but connect both to the same item code and revision. Keep failed and conditional results visible so a commercial deadline does not silently turn them into approvals.
For production and repeat orders, require written notice before a change to material, yarn, construction, finish, dye route, production site, subcontractor or care-related process. Decide which changes need a new component test, assembly trial or finished-product review. This turns “low shrinkage” from a vague claim into a reproducible control that design, sourcing, quality and the supplier can all use.

What is an acceptable shrinkage percentage for webbing?
There is no universal percentage for every webbing and application. Set the limit from the finished product, care route, attachment, customer requirement and fit or appearance risk. Record separate length and width criteria and validate differential change in the real assembly.
Does polyester or nylon webbing not shrink?
A fibre name does not guarantee zero dimensional change. Yarn, construction, manufacturing tension, dyeing, heat and moisture history, coating, finish and the selected wash-and-dry procedure can affect the result. Approve the actual production-intent tape under the intended treatment.
Is a “pre-shrunk” or “heat-set” supplier statement enough?
No. It may describe a process step, but it does not identify the final result, test method, care procedure, cycle count or assembly behaviour. Connect the stated process route to an identified sample, dimensional-change record and product-level approval.
Should buyers test loose webbing or the finished product?
Usually both when the tape is attached to another material. The loose-tape test helps identify component behaviour; the assembled test reveals differential change, puckering, twisting, exposed edges, fit and hardware effects. Use the evidence level that matches the release decision.
How many wash cycles should a webbing shrinkage test use?
