01First Locate Where Colour Enters the Product
The useful distinction is process stage, not a marketing adjective. In solution or dope dyeing, pigment or colourant is introduced while a manufactured fibre is being formed, so the resulting coloured yarn exists before the webbing is constructed. In yarn dyeing, already-made yarn is dyed—often in packages, beams, skeins or another yarn form—before weaving, knitting or braiding. In piece dyeing, a greige textile structure is produced first and then coloured as a formed tape or webbing.
Cotton Incorporated’s CottonWorks dyeing guide describes stock, yarn, fabric or piece and garment dyeing as different points at which colour can be applied. It explains that package dyeing circulates dye liquor through wound yarn packages, while piece-dyeing equipment processes textile material after formation. Those general textile definitions are a starting point; the exact equipment, dyestuff and preparation still depend on fibre, yarn, construction and the supplier’s process.
Ask the supplier to name the proposed process in plain language and connect it to the article: fibre producer or yarn source where relevant, yarn colour or dye-lot identity, greige construction, dyeing or finishing location, and finished webbing lot. Terms such as “colourfast,” “sustainable dyeing” or “custom dyed” do not reveal where colour entered the chain. A process name is useful only when it is linked to an identifiable sample and production record.

A supplier may use different terminology or combine coloured yarn systems. Confirm the actual material flow rather than classifying from appearance.
02Match the Process to the Colour and Pattern Architecture
Start with what must be coloured. A solid tape may be technically possible through more than one process. A woven stripe, colour-blocked edge or multicolour jacquard usually depends on placing selected coloured yarns into defined positions, which points the discussion toward solution-coloured or yarn-dyed yarn systems. A piece-dyed process normally colours the already formed article and therefore does not create a yarn-by-yarn woven colour layout by itself.
Do not let this rule become a shortcut. A webbing can mix yarn types, colours or material components, and different fibres may respond differently in one dyeing process. Heather, mélange, cross-dye and contrast effects can be engineered in several ways. Request a construction or yarn-placement diagram for multicolour articles and label each colour system, rather than assuming every visible shade was produced by the same process.
Colour availability and development economics also matter. Solution-dyed yarn programmes may use established colour ranges or production commitments at the yarn stage. Yarn dyeing can support deliberate coloured-yarn placement but creates yarn-lot and leftover-yarn decisions. Piece dyeing can postpone final shade selection until after greige production, subject to fibre, construction, equipment and order constraints. These are supplier- and project-specific planning questions, not universal MOQ or lead-time promises.
- Provide the artwork, stripe or logo repeat and identify every required colour.
- Mark warp, weft, binder, elastic or core yarns when their colour is visible.
- State whether the reverse and both edges have controlled appearance.
- Ask which colours are standard, which require development and what remains unapproved.
- Approve colour on the intended construction, not on an unrelated yarn or fabric swatch.
03Do Not Turn the Dyeing Process Into a Quality Ranking
The colouration process alone does not prove shade accuracy, rubbing resistance, wash fastness, light fastness, dimensional stability, hand or suitability for a finished product. Those results also depend on polymer or fibre, pigment or dyestuff selection, preparation, fixation, washing-off, finishing, construction and exposure. A poor execution of a suitable process can fail; a well-controlled process can still be wrong for the application if the test plan or acceptance target is wrong.
UNIFI’s official colour-technology page illustrates the distinction. It describes both yarn-dyeing technologies and a solution-dyed product in which colourants are added to the polymer. Its environmental and performance statements are tied to named technologies, materials, tests and disclosed comparison bases. Buyers should treat such evidence as product-specific, not as proof that every solution-dyed or yarn-dyed material has identical properties.
Write acceptance requirements independently from the process. Define the physical colour reference and viewing condition, the production-intent construction, relevant colourfastness methods, acceptance limits, specimen stage and decision owner. If two processes are under consideration, compare labelled samples using the same end-use requirements. The winning option is the one that meets the project’s combined design, performance, documentation, quantity and supply criteria—not the one with the most impressive process label.
04Build the Test Plan From the Finished-Product Exposure
A bag strap, garment belt, shoe pull tab and decorative tape do not experience colour in the same way. Map contact with pale materials, wet handling, laundering, perspiration, outdoor light, cleaning agents, heat and repeated abrasion. Then choose the method and limit required by the buyer, product programme or target market. Process selection can inform the risk discussion, but it does not replace testing of the actual article.
ISO 105-X12 specifies a method for assessing colour rubbed off a textile and staining of another material, with dry and wet rubbing options. ISO 105-C06 covers defined domestic and commercial laundering procedures. These official scopes answer different questions. A rubbing result cannot stand in for laundering, and neither automatically covers light exposure or a product-specific chemical contact. Record the full method designation and selected procedure rather than writing only “fastness test.”
Test the correct stage. Loose yarn can support process control, but buyers normally need evidence tied to the finished webbing and, where interaction matters, the intended assembly or adjacent material. Identify colour, construction, lot, finish, specimen orientation and conditioning on the report. A passing result supports that tested configuration under that method; it does not prove every colour, lot, construction or end use.

05Separate Process Potential From a Verified Environmental Claim
Moving colour earlier in the supply chain can remove a later dyeing step for a particular yarn or article, but that observation is not a complete environmental comparison. Fibre production, colourant manufacture, texturing, webbing construction, finishing, rejected stock, transport, wastewater treatment and the comparison baseline all affect the result. Ask what process boundary and reference product support any water, energy, emissions or waste statement.
The European Commission’s textiles BAT conclusions show why wet processing must be evaluated as an operated system. They address dye selection, low-liquor and low-volume application systems, pH control, removal of unfixed dye and polyester-dyeing practices. ZDHC’s Wastewater and Sludge Guidelines expressly include dyeing and finishing of fibres, yarns, threads, fabrics, textile trims and laces. Neither source supports a blanket claim based only on a process name.
For a sourcing decision, request evidence at the level of the claim: a product-specific life-cycle study for a comparative footprint statement, facility and period identity for wastewater evidence, traceable chemical-input documentation for restricted-substance management, and transaction or scope documents for certified material claims where applicable. Check issuer, validity, scope, material, site, product and lot connection. Do not convert a supplier presentation or a certificate from one stage into a broader finished-product claim.
- What exact product and colouration process does the claim cover?
- What baseline, geography, production period and system boundary were used?
- Is the evidence product-specific, facility-specific or only general guidance?
- Does the named site perform the relevant wet process or subcontract it?
- Can the finished webbing lot be connected to the supporting material and process records?
06Control Lots, Leftover Material and Process Changes
Each process creates a different chain of colour decisions. Solution-dyed programmes need control of coloured yarn designation and lot before construction. Yarn-dyed programmes need control of yarn dye lots and their placement in the article. Piece-dyed programmes need control of greige identity, dye batch and finishing lot. The buyer does not need every confidential recipe, but does need enough identification to trace a shipment and investigate variation.
Plan repeat orders while the first sample is being approved. Record which physical sample is the visual master, what instrument or visual method supports shade review, how lots are labelled and separated, and whether leftover yarn or greige may be carried into another order. If a repeat requires a new raw-material, yarn-dye or piece-dye lot, define the comparison and reapproval gate before cutting or assembly begins.
Treat a process change as a controlled change even when the colour name stays the same. Moving from piece dyeing to coloured yarn, changing yarn supplier, substituting a pigment or dyestuff system, or altering a finish can affect appearance, hand, dimensions, sewing, fastness and claim documentation. Ask the supplier to declare the change, submit an identified sample and repeat the checks affected by it. Update the specification and approved-sample revision after acceptance.
07Use a Process-Neutral RFQ and Approval Framework
A strong RFQ describes the outcome and asks the supplier to disclose the process. Start with product location, construction, fibre direction, finished dimensions, face and edge, solid or multicolour artwork, physical colour reference, quantity by colour and delivery sequence. Add care, rubbing, light, chemical or outdoor exposure; required methods and limits; documentation; lot labelling; and repeat-order expectations.
Invite a process proposal when more than one option could work. The response should state what is standard, what needs development, what minimum or scheduling constraint applies to this exact process, which stage the first submission represents, and what can still change before production. Compare total evidence and project fit rather than demanding a process label without understanding its consequences.
Close the approval loop with a production-intent webbing sample. Review shade beside the real shell, lining or hardware; confirm pattern placement, face, reverse and edges; build the intended seam or hardware path; complete applicable tests; and retain the signed or digitally controlled reference. Then link sample revision, process, lots and reports to the purchase order. This framework preserves supplier engineering flexibility while keeping the buyer’s critical requirements visible.

Is solution-dyed webbing always more colourfast than piece-dyed webbing?
No universal conclusion follows from the process name alone. Fibre, colourant, process control, construction, finish and the chosen exposure method all affect the result. Compare the actual production-intent webbing under the methods and limits required for the finished product.
Can piece-dyed webbing have custom colours?
It can be a custom-colour process when the fibre, greige construction, equipment and order conditions are suitable. The supplier should confirm feasibility, development stage, order constraints and lot plan for the specific article rather than applying a generic promise.
Which process is best for striped or multicolour jacquard webbing?
A yarn-placement design normally needs selected coloured yarns before the webbing is formed, using solution-coloured, yarn-dyed or combined yarn systems. Confirm each visible yarn system, artwork repeat, face, reverse and edges on the intended construction.
